Chapter Five

I quickly discovered that sustaining my thirst with plasma pouches had me spending money faster than I could make it.

I learned I could fish or hunt for frogs to convert to plasma. As unappetizing as that sounded, I was game to try.

Fishing relaxed me, but it felt like a waste of time. I could be writing and earning money. I left the fishing spot feeling discouraged when I spotted Marcus. He walked right past me like he'd never seen me before.

That fucker! I made up my mind right there and then, that we'd go on a date and I'd convince him to become my man. Then we'd go on another date and I'd dump his ass. No one's treating me like that.

I dreaded going back to the shack. I was still wary of spending too much with the writing gigs not paying much and the plasma packs costing a small mint. But I scavenged around a construction site and a clearance home improvement shop. Stone floors, a bit of wallpaper with a new counter and sink brightened up the place a little.

I celebrated by slipping into something roomier and calling Marcus for a date at a bar in a town close by.

I had him eating out of my hand and agreeing to be my man in no time at all.

While I was there I met as many single men as I could, discretely of course.

It was a very successful date. When I arrived home I chose my first two vampire powers: Eternally Welcome and Bat Form.

I felt overwhelmed by everything I needed to do before the baby arrived: earn money, read up on parenting, and find a solution for my expensive diet.

A little internet research helped my solve my thirst issue. I could buy a small aquarium and purchase fish at the pet store to convert for plasma packs. The conversions weren't as tasty as the plasma bank packs, but they were just as filling.

Marcus called for a date. Perfect timing, I could ditch him before the birth. I met him in Del Sol Valley. It was mid-day and the sun was blazing hot. I experienced my first fucking-hell-my-skin-is-blazing moment. Shit that hurt! I convinced him to go in quickly and did all the date-y things.

I was bored as fuck, but then I realized I had an amazing opportunity. It was mid-day and very few people around. Upstairs was a bouncer, all alone with sweet smelling blood. If I was quick, I could compel and feed without being caught.

Shit! It was like having a Kobe steak after existing on cheap ground round. And my thirst was satiated for the first time. One day I hoped to have a house filled with willing feeders. Or unwilling. I didn't care. Once this contract was fulfilled, all bets were off.

It was evening by the time I'd finished drinking so I walked outside with Marcus and dumped him.

No point in letting a good evening go to waste, I met a few more potential donors and even scored a celebrity's autograph.
