Chapter Two
After the old woman left the library I texted my mom and told her I was leaving town. I smashed my old phone and threw it in the trash can before I caught my bus. I slept fitfully throughout the night in the cramped bus seat. The driver dumped me off in the middle of fucking nowhere on the first day of autumn. The map told me what road to follow to Forgotten Hollow. My breath hitched in delight at my first glimpse.
This was my kind of place! I wondered which beautiful house was mine. I looked for the address as I walked down the street. My jaw dropped when I laid eyes on my new property.
Shit! This place was a dump!
Maybe it was a magic building like a Harry Potter tent or the Tardis and it was bigger and nicer on the inside?
Fuck no, this place was a hellhole. That bitch pulled a fast one. I wasn't going to stay! The instant I thought those words, my wrist where I'd made the cut for signing in blood began to burn and ooze. I'd signed a contract. In my blood. There wasn't any way back, only forward. I had to do this. And with any luck I'd have all the time in the world to hunt that cow down.
I poked around and discovered a brand new laptop as promised, two nice cradles, a few groceries and 10K in the freezer. The place also had a couple of wires strung along providing electricity and internet to the lappy. At least I had that going for me.
I decided it was best to get on with it and headed up the hill to find Vlad. Might as well get the first step over with. I found him just outside his posh house.
Vlad was a bigger asshole than my old boss and step-dad rolled into one. I tried sucking up anyway, needing his help and all. But in no time at all he had me seeing red. Then he told me to leave his property and ask the Vatore siblings to turn me. Next thing I knew there was a puff of black smoke and he turned into a bat that flew off.
I stomped down the hill, plotting all sorts of evil against Vlad once I became strong enough to take him. Maybe it was best he didn't turn me, that might mean he could control me. I still don't know jack crap about real vampires.
I found Caleb Vatore easily enough. He was easier on the eyes and a lot more pleasant than Vlad. With a bit of explanation and sweet talk, he agreed to turn me.
When he bit into my neck, I was filled with a warmth that rivaled the big O. But it was even better when I sucked the blood from his wrist. Oh yeah, I was liking that. I met his sister, Lilith, and she told me I should read up on vampire lore to figure my way through this. And they'd all help, even onery Vlad, once I transformed.
I started feeling hungry and queasy so I headed back to my dump. I had things to do: read up on vampire lore, find an on-line writing course, see about this freelance writing thing, and look over the fine print on that contract I'd blindly signed.
A little later Caleb knocked on my door as part of the welcome-to-the-'hood committee. I was too embarrassed to let him in to see the shack I was living in, so I begged off.
Later that night I tried to ease the burning hunger in the pit of my stomach. I wished I'd never saw that old woman.
